The GIMP 2.0 Released - a free photograph/digital-image edit program for Linux, Mac, Windows

The Gimp

MozillaQuest Magazine's (mozillaquest.com) has some very nice and comprehensive coverage of GIMP 2.0. In addition to the GIMP 2.0 source code release story, MozillaQuest Magazine has a recent overview and three tutorials based on GIMP 1.3, which is the development version of GIMP 2.0 and therefore is a very good preview of GIMP 2.0. Altogether, lots of nice screen shots of GIMP 2.0.

MozillaQuest Magazine (mozillaquest.com) reports: GIMP 2.0 is an excellent, free, open source, desktop, pixel-based, image manipulation and editing program. You can use it to edit digital photographs and other graphics. Or, you can create stunning digital graphics from scratch with the GIMP.

The most immediately noticeable improvement in GIMP 2.0 over the preceding GIMP 1.x versions is the look and feel of the GIMP, the user interface. Another major and noticeable GIMP 2.0 improvement is the Text Tool particularly the capability to edit text layers at later stages of work on an image.

GIMP is open source software. GIMP is a cross-platform (XP) program for the GNU-Linux, UNIX, Apple Macintosh, and Microsoft Windows platforms. GIMP looks and feels much like Adobe Photoshop. Unlike Photoshop, GIMP is free and does not need to be registered or activated.

The GIMP 2.0 desktop and UI make GIMP as easy to use as Photoshop, perhaps even easier. Other than prepress work, you likely can do just about everything that you need or want to do with GIMP instead of Adobe Photoshop. Moreover at Photoshop's $649 price tag there are 649 more good reasons to use GIMP instead of Photoshop. Rather than thinking of GIMP as a Photoshop clone, think of the GIMP and Photoshop as similar software products of comparable quality. If you are looking for a first class image, graphic, and photo editing program, give the GIMP a spin. Considering that GIMP is a free download, it's a very easy thing for you to do.
