Syncthing: Open Source Bittorrent sync alternative (p2p sync tool)  View Printable Version
Wednesday, June 04 2014 @ 05:19 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

Open SourceSyncthing is a cross-platform peer-to-peer file synchronization client/server application written in Go. Similar to BitTorrent Sync, the tool can be used to synchronize files between computers however, unlike BitTorrent Sync, Syncthing is open source

"Syncthing replaces Dropbox and BitTorrent Sync with something open, trustworthy and decentralized. Your data is your data alone and you deserve to choose where it is stored, if it is shared with some third party and how it's transmitted over the Internet".

Open SourceBogus copyright claims on YouTube are getting more and more prevalent, but they only get exposure when they do damage to high-profile targets. Konqueror vs Firefox  View Printable Version
Saturday, May 10 2014 @ 03:01 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

KDEAs part of the series looking at the applications that are installed by default with the KDE version of openSUSE it is worth noting that there are two web browsers installed, Firefox and Konqueror.

Konqueror is part of the KDE toolset and so it is no surprise that this is included.

Does the inclusion of Firefox mean that Konqueror isn't good enough on its own or was it installed just to give users a choice?

Tech giants, chastened by Heartbleed, finally agree to fund OpenSSL  View Printable Version
Thursday, April 24 2014 @ 05:58 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

Open SourceThe important role OpenSSL plays in securing the Internet has never been matched by the financial resources devoted to maintaining it.

The open source cryptographic software library secures hundreds of thousands of Web servers and many products sold by multi-billion-dollar companies, but it operates on a shoestring budget. OpenSSL Software Foundation President Steve Marquess wrote in a blog post last week that OpenSSL typically receives about $2,000 in donations a year and has just one employee who works full time on the open source code.

Yes, you should replace Windows XP with Linux  View Printable Version
Wednesday, April 23 2014 @ 10:03 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

LinuxI’ve tried to mostly ignore the end of Windows XP, as I noted in an earlier column about it. But I ran across an article today that I just had to cover here on EOL. Infoworld has a meandering column that expresses serious doubts about replacing Windows XP with Linux. It comes complete with a graphic of a hideous looking penguin with yellow and red eyes that looks like something out of somebody’s nightmare. Yes, the media has been reduced to using scary looking penguins to dissuade people from using Linux.
