Nine Lessons Other Desktops Can Learn from KDE  View Printable Version
Friday, February 28 2014 @ 04:08 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

KDEThe story of KDE's user revolt is well-known. What is less well known is that, in the six years since then, KDE has been steadily regaining its user-share.

In fact, for the last few years, KDE has registered as the most popular desktop among experienced users. Despite the obvious limitations of reader polls, they show KDE's popularity consistently well ahead of Xfce, the usual runner up, in2011, 2012, and 2013 in LinuxQuestions' Members Choice Awards and in Linux Journal's 2013 Readers' Choice Awards. Even assuming a wide margin of error in the polls, the consistency makes KDE's recovery hard to question.

'Broken by design: systemd' is itself kind of broken  View Printable Version
Saturday, February 15 2014 @ 01:27 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsRecently, an article by Rich Felker called Broken by design: systemd has been making the rounds. While I am sympathetic with complaints about systemd, the problem is that this article is both more or less deliberately misleading and factually wrong in various of its sections. Normally I would pass over this (per the lesson of the famous xkcd strip), but not today for various reasons. I'll be quoting from the article to comment on specific issues I have with it.

The Debian technical committee vote concludes - systemD choosen  View Printable Version
Tuesday, February 11 2014 @ 05:05 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

LinuxWe exercise our power to decide in cases of overlapping jurisdiction
(6.1.2) by asserting that the default init system for Linux
architectures in jessie should be systemd.

Should the project pass a General Resolution before the release of
"jessie" asserting a "position statement about issues of the day" on
init systems, that position replaces the outcome of this vote and is
adopted by the Technical Committee as its own decision.

Why the World Needs OpenStreetMap  View Printable Version

Open SourceEvery time I tell someone about OpenStreetMap, they inevitably ask “Why not use Google Maps?”. From a practical standpoint, it’s a reasonable question, but ultimately this is not just a matter of practicality, but of what kind of society we want to live in. I discussed this topic in a 2008 talk on OpenStreetMap I gave at the first MappingDC meeting. Here are many of same concepts, but expanded.

Linux Blackberry OS 10 Cordova plugin development setup  View Printable Version
Thursday, January 02 2014 @ 10:26 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsThis semester I’m contributing towards HTML5 on BB10 with thanks to UCOSP and my team’s mentor Tim Windsor from Blackberry. We’re implementing and porting cordova (phonegap) plugins.

Setting up my development environment under linux (Ubuntu 13.04) took the full first day of our face-to-face sprint. I am thankful Tim was sitting across the table and was willing to answer my many questions.

For this tutorial I am going to assume you are on Ubuntu 13.04 but other linux distros should be the a similar process.
