My friend Robin Miller recently wrote a very decent article about how spoiled we Linux users are, which inspired me to write this article that I've been kind of meaning to write for a while anyway, an article about how the various Linux repositories are and have been such a vast competitive advantage for Linux.

Linux distributions have a fantastic advantage in that you can have all of your software come from a single repository if you choose. This makes Linux distributions much easier to maintain.

French Government Chooses Mandrakesoft to Replace 1500 Windows NT servers  View Printable Version

Mandrake LinuxThe French Ministry of Equipment has chosen Mandrakelinux Corporate Server to replace 1,500 Microsoft Windows NT servers in a national scale deployment. Recently, Civil Service Minister Renaud Dutreil was quoted in Reuters as saying "the competition is open" between open-source and Microsoft for the nearly one million government computers. Mandrakesoft is proud to supply the operating system for the Ministry of Equipment deployment, and to supply open-source alternatives to governments around the world.

Trolltech Releases First Qt 4 Technology Preview  View Printable Version

Trolltech has announced the availability of the first Qt 4 Technical Preview. Qt 4, the next major release of the popular cross-platform C++ application framework which KDE is based on, is scheduled for final release in late Q1, 2005.

Five new technologies, codenamed Arthur, Scribe, Interview, Tulip, and Mainwindow are being incorporated into the next major version of Qt 4.0.

Mandrake LinuxMandrakesoft today announced its audited financial results for the first half-year (October 2003 - March 2004). Compared to previous unaudited results (announced in April 2004), net result has been increased by 511KE (~ $630 K).

July 7, 2004 (The Internet) - The KDE Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of KDE 3.3 Beta 1. As another step towards the aKademy in late August, this release is named Klassroom.
