Injunction to Enforce GPL  View Printable Version
Thursday, April 15 2004 @ 11:58 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

Open SourceFrom /.:

"The netfilter/iptables project has just been granted a preliminary injunction against a GPL infringing WLAN AP Vendor. The project is trying to fight against the increasing number of products sold in violation of the GPL. Following a number of out-of-court settlements, this is the first case where a company refused to sign a letter to cease and desist. So we took the logical next step and applied for a preliminary injunction. The court reviewed the case and confirmed that Sitecom is in fact in violation of the GPL license terms."

KDEPosted by William Kendrick over at KDE News:

"I gave my presentation "KDE 3.2: A User's Perspective" to my local Linux User Group last Tuesday night as previously announced. The talk was well received, and left some people (even KDE users) overwhelmed with new information. It just goes to show that I wasn't the only one who knew KDE was a great environment, but hadn't even scratched the surface yet! My presentation 'slides', a collection of over 3MB of screenshots of KDE in action, are now online for your viewing pleasure"

Joint Statement about GNU/Linux Security  View Printable Version
Wednesday, April 07 2004 @ 09:15 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General News"GNU/Linux vendors Debian, Mandrake, Red Hat, and SUSE have joined together to give a common statement about the Forrester report entitled "Is Linux more Secure than Windows?". Despite the report's claim to incorporate a qualitative assessment of vendor reactions to serious vulnerabilities, it treats all vulnerabilities as equal, regardless of their risk to users. As a result, the conclusions drawn by Forrester have extremely limited real-world value for customers assessing the practical issue of how quickly serious vulnerabilities get fixed."

Open Source Software: What Is It and How Does It Work?  View Printable Version
Monday, April 05 2004 @ 07:05 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General News" Solicitor Dr. Ben Kremer and his firm, Freehills in Australia, have graciously given Groklaw permission to reproduce his recent article, "Open Source Software: What Is It and How Does It Work?" originally published in their newsletter and available on the Internet here. I asked for permission because I find it to be one of the clearest, most understandable articles I've come across yet on the GPL, what it is legally (contract or license), and how it works, and I thought it was important to present it to as wide an audience as possible and to have it in Groklaw's searchable collection. Thank you, Dr. Kremer and Freehills."
