New Mandrake Mirror Structure coming soon  View Printable Version
Saturday, April 03 2004 @ 09:19 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

Mandrake LinuxGreg Meyer posted this helpful info to the Mandrake Expert List:

A couple of days ago, Warly, The Mandrake release captain, posted to the Cooker Mailing List that the structure of the mirrors will be chaning soon to accomodate the finalization of the Mandrake 10.0 release and the continued development that will be going on in the stable community branch. Here is his original post:

theaimsgroup

The reason I am posting this is that as the mirrors start to synch up over the next few days, you may find your urpmi/rpmdrake spitting out errors when you try to istall something or update. This will simply be because the paths on the mirrors will have changed, and consequently, your urpmi sources will have to be changed to accomodate this.

KDE Impresses at CeBIT  View Printable Version
Saturday, April 03 2004 @ 08:58 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

KDE The KDE Germany Team was exhibiting the KDE team's achievements at the world's largest computer trade show CeBIT in Hannover, Germany from 18.03 - 24.03. Hosted at the booth of Linup-Front, the team presented KDE 3.2 as well as a recent developer snapshot of KDE PIM on an Athlon64 system. Most people asked to see the KDE/Qt integration for OpenOffice.org and GTK as well as Kontact. They were impressed to learn how fast KDE is implementing the promise to become the "Integrative Desktop Environment" that lets you use a wide variety of popular applications while still maintaining consistency in look and -to some extent- even feel. Another focus of interest was KIOSK, which is now even easier to handle thanks to Kiosk Tool. Read on for the full story about KDE at CeBIT 2004.

Mandrakesoft Exits Bankruptcy  View Printable Version
Tuesday, March 30 2004 @ 05:02 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

Mandrake LinuxAltadena, CA; Paris, France; March 30th, 2004 - The Commerce Court today accepted Mandrakesoft's exit plan from 'redressement judiciaire' (Chapter 11 like protection). The plan was approved as proposed by the company and its court appointed administrator.

The plan provides for the payment of creditors, without recapitalization as a precondition, over a period of nine years. The turnaround was largely made possible by improvements in the company's financial results -- Mandrakesoft recently recorded its first profitable quarter since 1999. This signals the return to normal operations for Mandrakesoft after a 14 month observation period.

Open SourceFrom Open:

It's been more than a week since we last posted. For good reason. The lights have been burning at all indecent hours at openBench Labs to bring you an arboretum of facts and observations as you plow your way through storage networking to figure out what designs cost least in money and trauma. In the first of a series of reviews we pose the question: Is it time for SMBs to move to a SAN fabric? Read what openBench Labs discovers as we examine 2GB SAN infrastructure using nStor storage system and storage management software, and products from Brocade and Emulex.

The Gimp

MozillaQuest Magazine's (mozillaquest.com) has some very nice and comprehensive coverage of GIMP 2.0. In addition to the GIMP 2.0 source code release story, MozillaQuest Magazine has a recent overview and three tutorials based on GIMP 1.3, which is the development version of GIMP 2.0 and therefore is a very good preview of GIMP 2.0. Altogether, lots of nice screen shots of GIMP 2.0.

The Microtek S1/D1 Digital Camera for the Linux, Mac, and Windows Platforms  View Printable Version

Hardware

Looking for a Linux compatible camera for less that $100? MozillaQuest Magazine (mozillaquest.com) reports: The photographic quality of the Microtek Take-It S1/D1 is impressive for an under $100 digital camera. In addition to taking digital photographs, you can use the S1/D1 to make video clips and record sound -- or use it as a Web cam. Moreover, you can upload your S1 digital photographs, video clips, and sound clips to your PC or show and play them on your TV.

All in all, at its $99 list price the Microtek Take-It S1 Digital Camera is a very good bang for the bucks. Moreover, other than the Web cam function, the S1 works with all three major consumer/desktop operating systems, Linux, Apple Mac, and MS Windows.
