Nvidia loses 10 million GPU order due to poor Linux support  View Printable Version
Friday, June 29 2012 @ 05:04 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

HardwareRecently, Linus Torvalds made it clear just how displeased he is with Nvidia. If his colorful language wasn’t enough of a confirmation, the familiar one-finger gesture he made certainly did. But while Nvidia can deal with public criticism (even from someone as influential as Torvalds), they’re probably having a harder time swallowing the hundreds of millions of dollars in sales they just lost due to poor Linux driver support.

PySide on the PlayBook  View Printable Version
Saturday, June 16 2012 @ 07:16 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsIn my last post I talked about wanting to hook Python to the Qt port for the PlayBook. Since then, after considering other approaches, I decided to take a closer look at PySide [2]. My quick review of it concluded that I'd be duplicating key parts of its functionality if I tried doing anything from scratch.

General NewsAnyone who uses Skype on Linux will be happy to hear that a new version has been made available today, bringing with it a host of essential updates and new features.

Skype 4.0, codenamed “Four Rooms for Improvement,” is long overdue, and Marco Cimmino makes a point of thanking Linux users for their patience on the Skype blog. The wait seems to have been worth it, though.

Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsAdobe has announced the release of an update for Flash Player on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android 3.x and 4.x, and within its own AIR runtime. The update addresses several critical vulnerabilities which involve memory corruption, stack overflows, integer overflows, security being bypassed, null dereferencing and binary planting (DLL hijacking). All, except the security bypass, could lead to code execution.

First Impressions of Mageia 2  View Printable Version
Tuesday, June 05 2012 @ 06:02 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

MageiaMageia began its life not so long ago by being a community fork of the Mandriva Linux distribution. The future of Mandriva, as a company, has been in question for years prompting several developers and users to push for an independent, community-oriented distro. The first release of Mageia, version 1, got off to a fairly good start. It didn't vary much technologically from Mandriva and felt a bit like a test run, as though the developers were making sure all the proper infrastructure was in place.

GamesHumble Indie Bundle 5 was launched recently with five popular and award winning indie games. All these games are supported natively on Linux except one, LIMBO.

LIMBO doesn't run natively on Linux and instead uses a Wine/CodeWeavers wrapper. It has been a hot topic for debate in last couple of days and Humble Bundle organizers have commented on this.

Mageia 2 Review – Pure Magic  View Printable Version
Wednesday, May 30 2012 @ 10:57 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

MageiaMageia has been pretty popular ever since its original release last year. While all Linux distributions give you more choice than any other operating system, Mageia was one of the few distros that has a lot of these choices upfront. This is partly due to it being an offshoot of Mandriva, however the team at Mageia have taken it noticeably further.
