Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsEver heard of WebKit2 and wondering what it means from a Qt perspective? Here’s an attempt to explain QtWebKit and QtWebKit2 in simple terms. I make no attempt to be completely technically correct, it’s meant to be able to explain terminology to the WebKit uninitiated.

KDEGood news for all users that don’t use Linux but still want to run Krita. In the last week lots of progress has been made towards getting Krita to run on Windows and Mac OS X. The Windows work was work was done by stuartmd who is working for KO GmbH. The screenshot below shows current git master running on Windows. The native windows look is a bit ugly, but can of course be changed to Oxygen.

systemd for Administrators, Part IX - On /etc/sysconfig and /etc/default  View Printable Version
Monday, July 18 2011 @ 07:27 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsSo, here's a bit of an opinion piece on the /etc/sysconfig/ and /etc/default directories that exist on the various distributions in one form or another, and why I believe their use should be faded out. Like everything I say on this blog what follows is just my personal opinion, and not the gospel and has nothing to do with the position of the Fedora project or my employer. The topic of /etc/sysconfig has been coming up in discussions over and over again. I hope with this blog story I can explain a bit what we as systemd upstream think about these files.

PHP roadmap to deprecate MySQL extention  View Printable Version
Saturday, July 16 2011 @ 10:13 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsGreetings PHP geeks,

Don't panic! This is not a proposal to add errors or remove this popular extension. Not yet anyway, because it's too popular to do that now.

The documentation team is discussing the database security situation, and educating users to move away from the commonly used ext/mysql extension is part of this.

This proposal only deals with education, and requests permission to officially convince people to stop using this old extension.

The Clone Wars – CentOS vs. Scientific Linux  View Printable Version
Tuesday, July 12 2011 @ 10:30 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

LinuxWith Linux in the Enterprise, RHEL is king. Sure there are people who love and use Debian, or Suse. I would imagine that if you looked hard enough you could likely find somebody who’s using Slackware or Gentoo in a business somewhere. But I think it can safely be said that RHEL is currently the dominant enterprise Linux distribution. Then, of course, there are the clones. If you so choose, you can forgo Shadowman’s Support team and either compile the freely available Redhat Source RPMs, or choose to use a community-supported RHEL clone. Currently, the two most popular of those clone distributions are CEntOS (Community Enterprise Operating System) and Scientific Linux (SL).
