General NewsNovell has announced that it will be retaining the copyrights to the UNIX operating system. In the wake of the acquisition of Novell by Attachmate, which included a sale of intellectual property to CPTN, a Microsoft led consortium, there were questions raised over whether that intellectual property included the copyrights to the UNIX operating system.

Open SourceOpen source has won. Oh, how time flies. When I started writing in Database in May 2003, my first column was about how the ICT Ministry had got the budget PC programme all wrong. ICT Minister Surapong had announced his great success at negotiating the inclusion of Windows XP and Office XP at just 1,500 baht, a 90 percent discount. He saw it as success. I saw it as capitulation.

Open SourceSamsung has released the source code that runs the new Galaxy Tab, opening the doors to third-party modifications and enhancements. The Galaxy Tab, hyped as the iPad killer, is an Android-based tablet featuring a 7" touchscreen and a 1.0 GHz ARM processor.

GamesThe proprietary game "Minecraft", which is written in Java, may have been inspired by Sauerbraten (also known as "Cube 2"). Minecraft is a browser-based first person "Sandbox" style adventure game where you can connect with other players over the Internet and build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D world. This kind of game isn't new, in fact if you've ever searched the Internet for Free multi-platform first person shooters, you've probably heard of Cube 2: Sauerbraten.

LinuxPhoronix recently published an article regarding a ~200 lines Linux Kernel patch that improves responsiveness under system strain. Well, Lennart Poettering, a RedHat developer replied to Linus Torvalds on a maling list with an alternative to this patch that does the same thing yet all you have to do is run 2 commands and paste 4 lines in your ~/.bashrc file.

AMD joins Intel's MeeGo OS effort  View Printable Version

AMD64In an effort to expand software compatibility for its upcoming Fusion chips, Advanced Micro Devices on Monday joined rival Intel's efforts to develop the open-source MeeGo OS.

AMD "will provide engineering expertise intended to help establish the technical foundations for next-generation mobile platforms and embedded devices," the company said in a blog post on its website. Joining the development effort could help expand market opportunities for its Fusion chips, the company said.

HowtoLet's see how to install 3 plugins that will help your vim or approach becomes increasingly become a true IDE. I must say that since I started using it I am fascinated with this editor that although costs a lot to learn to use it at first, it is worth. But until now, had some disadvantages compared to a real IDE like Eclipse or NetBeans because it lacks some amenities that these programs offer.
