Contributed by: Linegod

Open SourceWhile there has been speculation about it for weeks, Google has announced today from their I/O conference that they have open-sourced the VP8 video codec. VP8 is the video codec that was developed by On2 Technologies and then Google got its hands on it by acquiring the company a few months back. The older On2 VP3 codec is what went on to become the Theora codec. Google has also announced WebM as a new container format that combines the VP8 video codec with Vorbis audio.

Please don't port philosophy with code!  View Printable Version

Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsOne of my pet peeves is Linux installers for proprietary software requiring root permissions.

Last time, Adobe got me into rant mode by requiring root not only to install the Adobe Air runtime, but to install any Adobe Air based application as well. This time it's Abbyy Ė makers of the famous Finereader OCR software.

How to check if your email server looks like a spam source  View Printable Version
Monday, May 17 2010 @ 03:22 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

HowtoTaking full control of your own email, that is running your own email server, is a must if you really care about privacy, security or maximum customization.

When you start doing it though, you soon find out that the hardest, or at least lest documented task, is not how to send email, or how to block spam. It is how to make sure that the email you send is always accepted by other sites, that is how to find out if your email server looks like a spam source.

Konsoleís user interface changes  View Printable Version
Friday, May 14 2010 @ 12:53 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

KDEKonsole is the app that probably almost every KDE developer uses on a daily basis, but there hasnít been much development on the user interface front during the last releases. The two brave souls Robert Knight and Kurt Hindenburg are busy triaging and fixing bugs. So to say Konsole is more maintained than developed due to a simple lack of manpower. Nonetheless some recent changes may be worth blogging about.

K3b 2.0 status update (incl. note to distributors)  View Printable Version
Thursday, May 13 2010 @ 06:31 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

KDEItís been quiet about K3b 2.0. Itís not that itís no longer developed or anything.

There are two blocker bugs:

One related to DVD-DL burning (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=234033) and one to Blu-ray burning (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=236069).

The main problem is that Michal, the main developer, does not (yet) have a Blu-ray recorder to work on the a fix himself. He sent out letters to drive manufacturers to see whether they can sponsor one. No reply as of yet.

And the DVD-DL bug cannot be verified by either Michal; or Sebastian.

Mandriva has always been involved in investment and aquisition processes. Over the past years, Mandriva bought Edge-IT, Conectiva and Linbox FAS.
