We+have today released Mandriva Linux 2009, the new autumnal release of our distribution.

2009 is a bold release which brings the new KDE 4.1 as the default desktop, along with a re-designed installer and Mandriva Control Center and many other new features. Other significant updates include GNOME 2.24, OpenOffice.org 3, Mozilla Firefox 3, and kernel 2.6.27. Key features include new graphical in-line upgrade capability, netbook compatibility, class-leading hardware support, and support for working with mobile devices.

Main features of RC2 (compared to RC1) :

  • Improved boot speed
  • Support for encrypted partitions in installer and DiskDrake using LUKS
  • Improved support for netbooks hardware
  • Support for Intel G41 graphics chipset
  • GNOME 2.24
  • KDE4 theming complete (still some small issues to fix)
  • kernel 2.6.27rc7
  • installer new design is finalized

Netbook version of Mandriva thinks small  View Printable Version

Mandriva LinuxFrench software firm Mandriva has released a version of its Linux distribution designed for netbooks. Aimed at original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs), Mandriva Mini is a faster booting, smaller footprint version of the Mandriva desktop distribution, says Mandriva.

Based on Mandriva 2008, which was released last October, Mandriva Mini is designed to work onUsmall format, low-cost netbooks, which typically have screens ranging from 7 to 10 inches. It is said to support key netbook platforms, such as products based on the Intel Atom. According to a recent report on netbooks by Market Intelligence Center (MIC), netbooks will achieve sales of 8.02 million units in 2008, and 18.3 million units in 2009.

Flash Player 10 Coming Around the Final Bend  View Printable Version

General NewsAdobe has issued its second release candidate of Flash Player 10, which should be approaching the finish line. Developers have not only fixed a number of bugs, but added a few new features.

Among these new features is the ability to use graphical filters and effects in Adobe’s native Pixel Bender programming language for interactive 3D animation. The text layout engine provides new controls such as ligatures and right-to-left and vertical text rendering. Flash Player 10 integrates with the monitor’s ICC color management so that color graphics appear as developers intend them.

The fine folks at Codeweavers performed an 11 day experiment in getting Google Chrome working on Linux and Mac. Their efforts resulted in the Chromium proof of concept. 'Not only does this give Mac and Linux users a chance to see what all the hype is about, it also lets the world see just how far Wine has come and how powerful it truly can be. In just 11 days, we were able to bring a modern Windows application across to Mac and Linux.' Caveat: their implementation is free as in beer but not free as in speech.
