Samsung is backing Linux (SLP)  View Printable Version
Saturday, February 12 2011 @ 05:33 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsWith Nokia's recent news of jumping off the Linux bandwagon, it makes this Linux user wonder if a couple years down the road if we are going to have any choice other than Android when choosing a Linux based handset. I keep fairly current on news in the FOSS world, but I had never heard about the LiMo Foundation until a few days ago.

Contributed by: Linegod

General Newssystemd is a system and session manager for Linux, compatible with SysV and LSB init scripts. systemd provides aggressive parallelization capabilities, uses socket and D-Bus activation for starting services, offers on-demand starting of daemons, keeps track of processes using Linux cgroups, supports snapshotting and restoring of the system state, maintains mount and automount points and implements an elaborate transactional dependency-based service control logic.

Cross distribution Appstore Sprint  View Printable Version
Wednesday, January 19 2011 @ 10:10 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsAs Vincent wrote in his blog, the idea came up at the openSUSE conference. We should work on getting distributions on the same page when it comes to a Linux Appstore technology. Appstore API's have been in development for ages on linux so we have a strong base. The as the Open Collaboration Services we currently have on freedesktop.org are inspired by the GetHotNewStuff technology which was developed by Josef Spillner many years ago - KDE and GNOME have used this to deliver wallpapers and scripts to their users.

System Monitoring for the lazy admin part 1  View Printable Version
Tuesday, December 21 2010 @ 12:12 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsOnce upon a time, I used to not care about the health of my servers. And while some still suffer in relative silence, for the most part I have changed course on the matter, and there’s just no excuse NOT to monitor things up the wazoo, just in case.

But, monitoring can be complex. There are services out there that’ll do it for you, Open source software packages and commercial solutions alike. But, all of that is TOO MUCH EFFORT for the lazy admin. Nagios, for example, is powerful and flexible. But it takes time to get comfortable with it. And a commercial solution based on nagios, groundworks, which is meant to make things easy, is downright bloated and clunky to work with.

Ubuntu Myopia Continues Among Users  View Printable Version
Monday, December 20 2010 @ 05:36 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsGo ahead and try a Google search for “Linux” in the news feeds. In fact, try looking up “Linux” in any news search engine and see what you come up with.

Notice a pattern yet? For some reason that seems to escape most people, Ubuntu "owns" the Linux headlines with very few exceptions. Obviously Chrome OS and Android are in the top news headlines as well, however generally it's Ubuntu that shows up as most popular in open source news these days.

Touching the X11  View Printable Version

Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsThere was no easy way to make use of touch- input devices on Linux with Qt. Up until now. On a recent meeting with other people interested in getting touch (and here we are also talking about touch with multiple points) in Linux/X11 during the X.org Developer Summit and Ubuntu Developer Summit (great events!), it has been decided to fill this gap.

Making SFTP transfers fast  View Printable Version

General NewsSFTP, the Secure File Transfer Protocol, is a misleading name. It gives you the impression that it might be something like a secure version of FTP, perhaps something like FTPS but modeled over SSH instead of SSL. But it isn’t!

Wednesday, December 01 2010 @ 12:58 AM CST

General NewsBased on the run rates of the current quarter, Red Hat will likely reach $1 billion in annual revenue in 2011. Only a handful of companies, probably less than 20 software firms, have ever hit this milestone. Red Hat will be the first open source-focused company to break the billion dollar barrier.

General NewsNovell has announced that it will be retaining the copyrights to the UNIX operating system. In the wake of the acquisition of Novell by Attachmate, which included a sale of intellectual property to CPTN, a Microsoft led consortium, there were questions raised over whether that intellectual property included the copyrights to the UNIX operating system.
