The future is bright for Linux filesystems  View Printable Version
Tuesday, June 10 2008 @ 03:01 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsFrom LXer:

In a recent article, Linux File Systems: Ready for the Future?, Henry Newman expands on what he feels are shortcomings in current GNU/Linux filesystems. Specifically, he believes current Linux filesystem technology cannot meet the demands that massive implementations of 100TB or larger require. He states he received some emotional responses trying to either refute his information or impugn his character, although those comments do not show on either of the article's pages. This prompted me to get the real scoop on how Linux filesystem technology is trying to keep pace with the ever-growing need for storage space.

Wednesday, June 04 2008 @ 07:48 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsFrom Red Hat Magazine:

The phone rings. You pick it up, and it is the recruiter for your dream job. Your palms begin to sweat as the technical interview starts.

“You want to know the run-levels for Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® or Fedora®?” You pause, thinking. “Well, I use Linux every day, and I know single user mode is level 1…”. You stammer a bit, and say you’re drawing a blank for the rest. The recruiter thanks you in that “sorry” tone-of-voice, and hangs up the phone.

General NewsFrom Linux.com:

The recent success of the ASUS Eee PC has shown that running Linux from flash memory is now commercially viable in the consumer market. If you don't have an Eee PC, you can still run Linux from a humble USB flash disk, which will hold not only Linux but also your data. Several Linux distributions run from flash; here's how some of them compare.

Seeing Linux clearly: Demystifying KDE and GNOME  View Printable Version
Tuesday, May 20 2008 @ 09:35 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsFrom ITWire:

Ok, you have to give some kudos to Windows: everyone knows what a window is. In the Linux world, KDE and GNOME aren’t quite as obvious. A gnome stands in your garden or inhabits the World of Warcraft, and KDE doesn’t even spell a word. The truth is they’re the two major window environments for Linux today; if you don’t like one type of UI you have another. Here’s what they do, how they differ and how you can bend them to your will.

General NewsFrom phoronix:

If all goes according to plan, X.Org 7.4 will finally be released this month. This release isn't quite as elaborate as X.Org 7.3, which introduced input hot-plugging, EXA enhancements, and RandR 1.2 to just name a few features, but X.Org 7.4 is another update better enhancing this X server. In this article, we are presenting a release overview of the features to be found in X.Org 7.4, what's been delayed, and how this release is panning out.

Phoronix Test Suite Released  View Printable Version
Thursday, April 03 2008 @ 06:36 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsFrom phoronix:

Back in early February we announced that we were in the process of formalizing and releasing our internal test tools as a platform for facilitating easy to use, accurate, and reproducible Linux benchmarks based upon the testing work that we have been doing at Phoronix for the past four years. The goals with this are really to make it easier for Linux end-users to run reliable (both qualitative and quantitative) benchmarks for their own personal use, push more open-source projects to making their software more testable, and pushing hardware and software vendors for greater Linux testing based upon a standardized set of tests. Today we are very pleased to announce the first public release of the Phoronix Test Suite software, which is licensed under the GNU GPLv3, and the creation of a public database for freely sharing your test results and other information in a collaborative manner.

NVIDIA 169.12 Linux Display Driver  View Printable Version
Thursday, February 28 2008 @ 12:29 PM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

General NewsFrom Phoronix:

We know NVIDIA has been working on a new Linux display driver release, with the GeForce 9 series having been introduced just this past week, and today a new driver release has arrived for Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD. However, this new 169.12 display driver doesn't introduce support for the GeForce 9600GT and its official changes are limited to maintenance items.

The release highlights for the NVIDIA 169.12 driver include improving power management support for GeForce 8 series GPUs, improved stability on some GeForce 8 series GPUs, further improved GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap out-of-memory handling, nvidia-xconfig fix for modifying xorg.conf configurations without a "Module" section, and various bug-fixes. Among the other bug-fixes are addressing a bug that broke TwinView with TV-Out on some G80 GPUs, incorrect PowerMizer state being reported, and OpenGL crash fixes (the release notes mention running Counter-Strike with WINE). That's it for the official changes in this binary driver release.
