Using Named Pipes (FIFOs) with Bash  View Printable Version
Saturday, March 28 2009 @ 10:57 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

HowtoWhy might you want to use a named pipe in a shell script? One situation might be when you've got a backup script that runs via cron, and after it's finished, you want to shut down your system. If you do the shutdown from the backup script, cron never sees the backup script finish, so it never sends out the e-mail containing the output from the backup job. You could do the shutdown via another cron job after the backup is "supposed" to finish, but then you run the risk of shutting down too early every now and then, or you have to make the delay much larger than it needs to be most of the time.

HowtoThis tutorial explains how you can set, change and reset (if you've forgotten the password) MySQL root passwords. Time and again I see problems like mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)'. So I thought it's time to remind you how to solve MySQL related password problems. If you are just looking for a quick fix how to reset a MySQL root password you can find that at the bottom of this tutorial.

Preventing Brute Force Attacks With Fail2ban On Mandriva 2008.1  View Printable Version
Monday, September 01 2008 @ 11:28 AM CST
Contributed by: Linegod

HowtoFrom HowtoForge:

In this article I will show how to install and configure fail2ban on a Mandriva 2008.1 system. Fail2ban is a tool that obseves login attempts to various services, e.g. SSH, FTP, SMTP, Apache, etc., and if it finds failed login attempts again and again from the same IP address or host, fail2ban stops further login attempts from that IP address/host by blocking it with an iptables firewall rule.
